Dr. Andrew Zsigmond

Dr. ANDREW ZSIGMOND.

Born on 17th November 1935 in Transylvania (Romania) of ethnic Hungarian Sekler parentage, ennobled in 1604 King Steven Bocskai: ("Gregory Zsigmond de Lemheny"). Accepted into the Hungarian Federation of Nobilities 1989 and title confirmed by the Duke of Norfolk in 1992 through the IHGS. Made Chivalric Baron (2 sources) in 2000.

Parents moved to Hungary in 1944. Matriculated 1954 (with distinction) in Gyönk, entered the Faculty of Medicine University of Pécs and started singing opera as a hobby.

During the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 became politically active. Edited the Extraordinary Edition of the "University Weekly" and subsequently took up arms as member of the National Guard 1956, to arrest Communist Party and Secret Police officials and against the invading Red Army. After the brutal crushing of the Uprising escaped to Austria in January 1957, arriving in the United Kingdom later in the same month. Having no English, took up employment as an apprentice coal miner in Barnsley, Yorkshire and later as ward orderly in Wath-upon-Dearne. With the help of Roy Mason M.P. (later Lord Mason of Barnsley) gained entrance as a 3rd year medical student at the University of Liverpool and qualified in 1961. Worked as a physician in Liverpool ever since, having specialised in Occupational Medicine in 1981. Later owner of "The Clinic", (Diagnostic and Cosmetic Medicine). Retired in 2010. Became naturalised British subject in 1963. Entered UK politics in the Committee of Liverpool Against the Militants in 1985, elected Chairman of Liverpool Aigburth Conservative Association, became member of the Foreign Affairs Forum and fought the General Election of 1992 for the Conservative Party for the Liverpool Riverside Constituency. (Came 2nd in the 2nd safest Labour seat, keeping deposit, putting Lib-Dems 3rd!).

First returned to Hungary in 1966 (after an amnesty, as interpreter to LFC, through manager Bill Shankly and FIFA.)

An ardent conservative European.

  • Made Hon. Consul of Hungary in 1993 and was decorated by the President of Hungary trice.

Married with three children and four grandchildren, now lives in Woolton, Liverpool.

Hobbies: Opera, classical music, the arts, golf (badly) and skiing (better).

Having retired from mainline medicine, re-engaged with amateur opera, singing with Bentley Operatic Society in "The Merry Widow", "H.M.S. Pinafore" and "The Arcadians" and with the West Kirby Light Operatic Society in "TITANIC, The Musical".

Regularly speaks to societies in the North West of England on "The Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and my Subsequent Escape", and "A Church Too Far" (organizing the building of the first Christian church (URC) in Transylvania since WWII).
