BOTOX
THE PROBLEM AND THE TREATMENT:
Facial lines are caused by repeated use of facial muscles whenever we frown, squint or smile. They reflect these individual habits. Lines can be softened by filler injections like Collagen or Hylaform. In these processes the EFFECT is treated rather than the CAUSE The damage has already been done and continues to be done. The aim is to break the habit of frowning, to use the injections to make the patient forget to frown until the habit is broken.THE POSITIVE BENEFITS:
While the muscle is temporarily immobilised the forehead is at peace and the frown line, the forehead lines or the crow's feet - which are the result of an unpleasant habit - are not being created nor reinforced. The muscles are relaxed and the beauty and serenity of the face restored. The brow is lifted and the inter-brow distance is widened.THE POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS:
These are rare. Occasionally a temporary drooping of the eyebrow or eyelid may occur, lasting a few weeks. In a study less than 3% of cases complained of transient numbness or weakness of the muscles moving the eye, causing short-lasting double vision. The injection itself may cause a mild local swelling, with a needle mark or a little bruising, which might last for 1 to 2 days.THE BOTOX PROCEDURE:
The substance injected is Botulinium toxin. It has been used for many years as an accepted form or treatment for squints and nervous ticks. The substance cannot cause any permanent damage nor pass into the bloodstream as it attaches itself to the muscle and will not travel within the body. The action on the muscle is never permanent and from time to time the treated area may need 'topping up'. Because of larger muscles and thicker skin men need more units of treatment to achieve the same result. The injection takes around 5 to minutes and the patient will be asked to frown hard to establish the exact and individual pattern of muscular movement of the face. The injections are uncomfortable but brief. The effect commences after 3 or 4 days, will be fully established after 1 or 2 weeks and lasts for a few months.
On average we recommend treatment every 3 months. Very occasionally resistance to the drug may develop and it may not work effectively.
